APR is the annual percentage rate used for a loan. When referring to a mortgage, it's the cost of the home loan expressed as a percentage that you'll pay in interest and fees over a year. It's a simple interest rate that gets applied to the base amount you borrow, and it's built into your monthly payment.
APY stands for annual percentage yield or the interest you earn on a deposit account in one year. Interest can accrue in two ways: 1) Simple interest, which earns you the same amount whether it's applied daily, monthly or annually. 2) Compound interest, where the interest is applied not just to the initial amount you deposit but to the amount of interest you earn over the life of that deposit, applied daily, monthly or annually depending on the account.
A medallion signature guarantee is a special certification used for the transfer of stocks, bonds or other securities. It's a guarantee by the transferring financial institution that the signature on the account is genuine, and the financial institution accepts liability for any forgery. A medallion signature guarantee protects shareholders by preventing unauthorized transfers and possible investor losses. Unlike banks with notaries, participating financial institutions need to belong to a special program to transfer assets with a medallion signature guarantee.
